Backlinks or inbound links are the links directed to your website from other sites. Backlinks are important because they increase traffic to your site and contribute to getting you a higher position in Google’s search engine rankings.

This free backlinks service is different than many of the others as it organizes backlinks by domain. This is often a more helpful way to look at the information. For example, rather than showing that a site has 200 backlinks, it might show that all of those backlinks are from 10 domains.

Link Diagnosis
Link Diagnosis provides a report and a visualization of the backlink data. If you install their Firefox extension, you can get even more data.
Linkscape
This is a good free tool that runs a basic report of how many links you have going into your site. It’s good to get data from a few sources.

This blog by link building expert Debra Mastaler features great content and videos all about link building. What more can we say? Soak it up while you can.
Link Voodoo
This free set of Search Engine Optimization tools includes a Backlink Analyzer. Enter the url of the site you want to scan and get a message to “open” their application. It then takes a few minutes to report back all of that site’s backlinks.
Page Inlink Analyzer
Enter a URL and get a list of pages linking back to that url. It is based on Yahoo’s search engine as well as the De.li.ci.ous count. This is a free tool.
Smart PageRank
They say that inbound links are valuable when they are from highly ranked sites. This free tool analyzes the page rank of the backlink’s source.
